For the illustrations of Thomas the Tank Engine, Edmund Ward, then-publisher of the Railway Series, hired illustrator Reginald Payne, who decided to base Thomas on the LB&SCR E2 Class. Thomas is based on an LBSCR E2 Class, more specifically the version with the extended side tanks, these tank engines were built at Brighton Works between 1913-1916 to replace the E1 Class. They were used for shunting duties and short-distance goods trains in London and on the south coast, and last worked at Southampton Docks. Thomas is the No. 1 blue engine. He is a cheeky little engine who often gets into scrapes, usually by being over-eager to do things best left to bigger and more sensible engines. But clouds never last long in Thomas' world and soon he's bustling about again, playing his part in the yard and on his very own branch line.
